Conservation Commission

The Commission was established under NH RSA 36-A which authorizes its establishment "for the proper utilization and protection of the natural resources and for the protection of watershed resources of said city or town." RSA 36-A outlines four major responsibilities of the Conservation Commission:

  1. "… conduct researches into its local land and water areas…"
  2. "… seek to coordinate the activity of unofficial bodies organized for similar purposes …"
  3. "… keep an index of all open space and natural, aesthetic or ecological areas … all marshlands, swamps and other wetlands …"
  4. "… keep accurate records of meetings and actions …".

The Barnstead Conservation Commission addresses these responsibilities, as well as provides local input and comment on NH DES Wetland permit applications in town.

Our particular interest and the current focus of the Commission is on land protection strategies that will contribute to protecting open space and wildlife habitat, as well as maintaining the rural character of the town.

All members of the community who are interested in joining the Commission, learning more about the Commission's work, including its projects and activities, are encouraged to come to a meeting. Or contact the chairman with any questions or concerns.

The Barnstead Conservation Commission meets the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 PM in the Town Hall between September and June.

During the summer months, the Commission meets in the field at various town conservation properties to address specific projects.
