Health Concerns

The Office of the Health Officer receives calls from citizens about public health concerns ranging from too many animals to dishwashers sitting on a neighbor’s front lawn.

If you are unsure as to whether an issue is a public health hazard or not, please call and we can discuss the matter. Problems that are outside the range of the Health Officer’s responsibilities are referred to the appropriate agency (Department of Environmental Services, Department of Child and Family Services, Environmental Protection Agency, Board of Selectmen, Police Department for example). The Office of the Health Officer encourages you to make Barnstead an outstanding place in which to live.

Cancer Screening:  With screening there is a better success rate in sending cancer into remission.  Please contact the American Cancer Society at 800-ACS-2345 or www.cancer.org

New Smoking Laws in NH:  As of September 17, 2007 there is a new law which prohibits indoor smoking in public places.  Information can be found at www.gencourt.state.nh.us/rsa/html/xii/155/155-66.htm.

If you see a violation of this new law, please contact me or the Tobacco Prevention Department at 271-6891.

Winter Concerns

Flu:  Vaccinations: are being recommended for anyone with a chronic illness, children who are 6-23 months old, pregnant women, people who are over age 50 and health care workers.

COUGH means:

Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing

Use only your own glass and utensils - DO NOT SHARE

Use soap and warm water to wash hands often

Get plenty of sleep, exercise, and eat a healthy diet

Home is where you belong when you are sick, NOT work or school!

Septic Failures
Many of the septic systems in Barnstead are reaching their expected life span. Most systems last between 15 -20 years with proper care. Having your system pumped at least every three years is necessary to maintain a functioning system. There are many products available to extend the life of your system. Bleach and other chemicals do not belong down your drains or toilets.

How to know if your septic system has failed or is failing?
Sewage smell and/or standing water around the leech field are the main symptoms of a failing system.
