At the beginning of October 2006, the Barnstead Board of Selectmen appointed a committee to investigate and formulate a plan for updating the facilities for the Town Offices and Police Department.  This committee continues the work of last year’s committee that looked into the needs of all municipal departments and facilities.  The Committee feels that there is without a doubt a need to replace these facilities. 

After reviewing last year’s report, the committee toured both the Town Hall and Police Station. We visited facilities in Candia, Epsom and Gilford. Committee members also discussed other facilities that members have had the opportunity to visit.  We reviewed the work of Plan NH that was accomplished last summer that focused on the Timco site and the Rogers Property that the Town recently purchased.

We feel that the best location for the Town Offices and Police Station would be on the Rogers Property, probably near Shackford Corner Road in a combined facility.  This project would be the cornerstone of developing this land while remaining in a central location in the community.

The committee has approached this project with the concept of combining these two facilities under one roof for several reasons.  Economics of space and building operating costs, construction costs, security and promoting closer communication are just a few of the thoughts for this approach.

The goal is a building that is economical to construct and operate that can accommodate the Town’s immediate needs and into the future.  We feel it would be prudent to plan the building for beyond this time frame, but only build for the near future.  Preparing the plans now for future expansion will make it easier if and when the time comes for expansion as the Town’s needs grow.  We have also considered the suggestion of planning space for future SAU offices if the need arises.

The committee hopes to present more than one option to the Board of Selectmen for the towns’ people to consider at Town Meeting. The what, where, when and how will be decided by the Town Meeting.
