Barnstead In Bloom

In the spring of 2003, Barnstead-In-Bloom, a volunteer group, was created with the sole mission of planting and sprucing up some of the common areas of the town. We are not a garden club, nor do we hold regularly scheduled meetings. What we do is plant, weed, prune, mulch and water. Our goal is to make the public areas of Barnstead as pleasing to the eye as possible.
Our group quickly realized that the main focus during our first year would be Town Hall and the project seemed to immediately take on a life of its own. Along with the beautiful plantings Barnstead-In-Bloom purchased, we received many donations from local nurseries and it felt as though the entire town was excited about our plans. The Selectmen and the road crew supplied all of the support a civic group could ask for and the folks of Barnstead were more than generous with their contributions.
Digging Up Town Hall:
With the help of the town road crew, the entire front and side of Town Hall was dug up and the granite bumpers that had previously been removed were replaced. We even managed to make the walkway and step out of granite. Shortly after the planting was finished, Town Hall received a new coat of paint and many compliments were given from folks who came to Town Hall on business.
Other Plantings
The bandstand located next to the Center fire station and the triangle on the Parade were also spruced up and not only were we pleased with the results, but many were impressed with the new landscaping.
In the spring of 2004, we received a wonderful new birdhouse from Patti Atkins’ father. He fashioned the house with a NH license plate for a roof and the little house looks lovely among the plantings. It was placed on a birch limb and “planted” in the garden. We thank Patti’s father for his homemade gift. We love it.
Our major project in the spring of 2005 was to purchase and plant the flowering pear trees in front of Town Hall. We are hoping that you will all be treated to some lovely spring flowers in the coming years! Our aim was to give that section of Route 126 a “main street” look. All of us at Barnstead-In-Bloom would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Bob Eastman and his road crew for all their help. We couldn’t have done it without them and we appreciate their efforts on behalf of our town.
Throughout the summer of 2005, we maintained the Route126/28 triangle, the triangle on the Parade and the existing flowers around Town Hall.
The Holidays
This past winter, we continued our holiday tradition of placing wreaths on the doors at Town Hall and the Historical Society as well as lighting up the trees by the Town Hall front door. The Town Hall placed candles in the windows and it all looked festive and welcoming. We plan to continue with this holiday décor in the future.
All of us who are involved with Barnstead-In-Bloom would like to thank the many who gave their support and we invite everyone to join us in all of our future endeavors!
